Shower Dragons and Old Nonsense

Beware of dragons
For you are crunchy and good with ketchup

If you know me well, and most of you do, you might think I'm dark. You're right; I do have a dark side with which I'm quite comfortable. If you also think I'm fatalistic, you're wrong.

I'm also clean because I just got out of the shower. What do those two things have in common? Shower dragons. That's what I call those critters that I bump into late at night in the shower. You know them: the voices in your head that remind you of all the mistakes you made during the day. The ones that bring up regret over something you did, or didn't do, 20 years ago.

I should've gone to see Elise in the hospital when her baby was born with Down's Syndrome 20 years ago.
I wish I'd visited Grandmother more often in the nursing home.
I shouldn't have told my coworker about that party I went to.
When did my marriage die and why didn't I see it?
Am I a horrible daughter and sister?
Do my children blame me for the divorce?

The dragon roars are louder the tireder I am, and they're noticeably vicious late in the week and close to the full moon -- like tonight.

Then I remember this quote which I keep in the window above my bathroom sink, and it sets everything right again:

Finish each day and be done with it.
You have done what you could;
some blunders and absurdities have crept in;
forget them as soon as you can.
Tomorrow is a new day;
you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.

Always look forward, not back. You cannot change what has already happened. I like your quote. Read it often. xoxo

I thought I was the only one who did that.
